Onychomcosis is the condition caused by fungus that grow in moist, warm and dark places like the toe nails. In few cases they could be affected by the growth of yeast or mold.
Nail fungus starts off with a yellow or white spot at the nail tip. Later, the nail becomes thickened, changes shape, colour and texture. Onycholysis, is the condition in which the nail and the nail bed are separated which is very uncomfortable. If nail fungus is not treated, the infection might continue forever. On the other hand, even on treating it, it might go and then return.
3 simple home remedies
- Orange or Tea tree oil rub
Being a disinfectant by nature, tea tree oil possesses anti-bacterial and fungicidal properties. This makes it capable of treating fungal nail infections.
Orange oil proved good and has given favourable results when added in the mixture. It is essential to always dilute the oil before use.
How to use:
If you notice symptoms of nail fungal infection, you should follow the steps that follow.
Blend together half a spoon each of orange and grapeseed/olive oil and a teaspoon of tea tree oil. Take a small ball of cotton and soak it in the oil mixture and with a little gentle but firm pressure, apply it to the infected nail for the liquid to get released. Allow the oil to dry naturally.
Otherwise, you could soak your feet in water containing a few drops tea-tree oil for up to 20 minutes.
The above treatments must be done in the mornings and evenings.
- Soak in Vinegar and baking soda
Though baking soda cannot kill fungus, it is capable of preventing it from growing further and spreading to other parts. Vinegar is basically a weak acid which will aid in killing the nail fungus without changing the pH.
How to use:
Mix a cup of vinegar with sufficient water to immerse your feet. Soak for up to 20 minutes; then dry your feet with a paper towel. Now, add a few tablespoons baking soda and soak again for the same time and then dry again. Repeat this twice in a day. While vinegar kills the fungus, baking soda prevents it from growing further.
- Coconut oil
Coconut contains fatty acids that get attached to the layer of fat in the fungal membrane, which causes the fungus to get disturbed. Eventually, the fungal cells get disintegrated and finally destroyed.
How to use:
Apply a thin layer of coconut oil on the infected area. If more a single nail is infected, you will have to wash your hands while applying on each nail or you could wear gloves. Repeat this twice or thrice a day for best results.
Note: Before any kind of treatment for fungal nail infection, trim the infected nails as much as possible.
